Healthcare employment continued to trend up in August, adding 12,900 jobs, though at a slower pace than the average monthly gain of 32,000 over the prior 12 months, according to the Sept. 4 jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Four things to know:
1. Total U.S. employment rose by 162,000 in August, above the average monthly gain of 31,000 over the prior 12 months. Employment increased in food services and drinking places, and in local government education, while the information industry lost 23,000 jobs.
2. Hospitals added 7,600 jobs in August, and home health care services added 11,300. Ambulatory healthcare services overall added 7,100 jobs, with offices of physicians up 2,000 and offices of dentists down 4,600.
3. Nursing and residential care facilities lost 1,800 jobs. Social assistance, which BLS counts separately from healthcare, added 15,500.
4. The unemployment rate held at 4.1% in August, with 7 million people unemployed. Both measures changed little over the month and over the year.
