Athens-based Ohio University received $10 million through the state’s Rural Health Transformation Program to help expand the rural healthcare workforce and improve access to care across the state.
Four things to know:
1. The university will serve as a lead partner in Health Workforce Ohio, a statewide rural health workforce development strategy, according to a July 10 university news release.
2. The initiative will be co-led by The Health Collaborative and the Ohio Association of Community Health Centers, which will chair a steering committee of 11 statewide organizations.
3. Health Workforce Ohio will connect healthcare employers, schools, training providers and community organizations to recruit, train and retain health professionals in rural Ohio communities. Planned strategies include expanding career exploration programs, increasing apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities, strengthening telehealth and digital health training, reducing barriers to healthcare careers and supporting the upskilling of current healthcare workers.
4. The initiative is supported by more than 85 organizations across Ohio’s healthcare, education and workforce sectors. The $10 million award is funded entirely by CMS.
