To address a budget deficit approaching $1 billion, the system plans to cut 2,600 jobs in the fiscal year beginning in July, on top of 1,300 jobs being cut this year, according to the report. Half of the 2,600 cuts will likely be layoffs while the rest will be achieved through attrition, according to city officials cited in the story. Physicians and nurses will also be hit by the cuts.
The staff reductions are likely to cause program closures and consolidations, with elective surgery locations likely to be trimmed. The system serves 1.3 million New Yorkers, some 450,000 of whom are uninsured, according to the Journal.
