Oak Bluffs, Mass.-based Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, part of Mass General Brigham, is building housing for employees to help retain staff and support essential services, according to The Boston Globe.

The housing sits on a 26-acre parcel, now part of a 28-acre development, near MVH and close to the Atlantic Ocean.

Groundbreaking for the project occurred in August 2024, with the first residents expected to move in by the end of June, hospital spokesperson Greg Mathis told Becker’s.

The site includes a 48-unit apartment building, along with duplexes and townhouses totaling more than 70 bedrooms.

Units were built in Pennsylvania, then transported to the island. MVH has also worked with Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation on developing a public walking trail along the back of the land to connect with other area trails, Mr. Mathis said.

Denise Schepici, president and COO of MVH, told the Globe that the hospital is building the housing to help retain staff for essential healthcare jobs due to decreased housing affordability on the island.

The housing development, paid for through fundraising, is currently estimated to cost $38 million.
