Las Vegas system to host career fair for local colleagues facing layoffs

Las Vegas-based University Medical Center of Southern Nevada will host a two-day career fair to help workers affected by layoffs at another Las Vegas hospital, Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center, according to a Jan. 12 news release shared with Becker's.

This career fair is scheduled for Jan. 19 and 20, from 8 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. on both days at UMC's Delta Point Building. It is exclusively for those affected by the layoffs.

"Desert Springs Hospital is home to many of our community’s most dedicated and talented healthcare workers," UMC CEO Mason Van Houweling said in the release. "At UMC, we have tremendous respect and admiration for our industry colleagues at Desert Springs, and we're hosting this large-scale career fair to provide them with rewarding opportunities to continue their incredible work right here in the heart of our community at UMC."

Earlier this month, Desert Springs announced that it will lay off 970 employees as the facility transitions to a freestanding emergency department.

UMC said it is prepared to make on-the-spot job offers during its two-day event. Overall, the health system has more than 400 job openings, including clinical and nonclinical positions.

Desert Springs is part of the Valley Health System, a system owned and operated by King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services. UMC is a system with more than 4,000 employees.
