Seventy-four percent of millennials and 68 percent of Gen Zers are reassessing their life and goals, according to a Harris Poll survey. This is compared to 61 percent of Americans overall who took part in the survey. Younger people were also more likely than older people to say that the pandemic helped them realize that the goals they had for their lives weren’t the ones that would actually make them happy.
One 40-year-old nurse who spoke to Fortune said the pandemic triggered a reassessment of his career, his compensation as well as his happiness.
“I feel like I am saving lives, and I could work in a bank and make twice this. In a perfect world, I’d get out of health care altogether,” he said.
He has been reassessing working in healthcare and now dreams of opening up a small coffee shop or cheese shop.
“I could sell my house, quit nursing, and go somewhere and just take a stab at this,” he told Fortune. “I’d probably have less money, but I bet I would be happier.”
