Gen Zers are vocal about what they want from work

Generation Z workers are pushing back on the idea that they’re entitled, and instead are arguing that they are just more vocal about how they want their work to fit into their lives, Fortune reported May 2.

Data suggests that members of Gen Z (born 1997-2012) have similar views about what they value in a job compared to millennials (born 1981-1996) and Gen Xers (born 1965-1980), but Gen Z gets the reputation of being entitled and spoiled. Priorities for work are very similar across the generations, with all three placing compensation top, followed by flexible working hours and then being able to work remotely.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say that as a Gen Z [worker], we’re spoiled,” DeAndre Brown, a 22-year old Citibank employee and viral TikToker, told Fortune.”I just say that we’re doing what everyone else should have been doing a long time ago: setting strict boundaries at work.”

Gen Zers’ current place at the bottom of the corporate ladder and newest employees in many companies may be the reason they are so loud about what they want.

“I don’t think Gen Z wants more than others,” Mr. Brown said. “In fact, we want the exact same things as other generations. However, due to the internet, we have become way more vocal about it since we have the potential to reach a large audience.”
