Generation X workers are less likely than other generations to say their primary jobs provide long-term financial security, according to a survey from Goldman Sachs Asset Management.
The survey found that 57% of Gen X workers said their primary jobs provide a stable path toward long-term financial security, compared with 71% of millennials, 68% of Gen Z workers and 67% of baby boomers.
The survey included 5,106 U.S. respondents in July, including 3,612 working individuals across generations and 1,494 retirees ages 45 to 75. Goldman Sachs Asset Management released the findings Sept. 30.
Here are five more things to know:
1. Retirement savings progress declined across generations. Among Gen X respondents, 49% said their retirement savings were on track or ahead of schedule, down from 58% in 2025. The share also declined among Gen Z workers, from 75% to 66%; millennials, from 74% to 61%; and baby boomers, from 69% to 60%.
2. Everyday expenses were Gen X workers’ biggest financial obstacle. Thirty-seven percent cited rising day-to-day living costs as their greatest challenge to saving for retirement, compared with 33% of baby boomers. Housing costs were the top concern for Gen Z workers (37%) and millennials (36%).
3. Workers reported financial concerns affecting their jobs. Across generations, 54% of workers said financial worries made it difficult to focus at work, while 32% reported missing work in the past year because of a financial challenge. Another 34% said they were likely to seek a new job primarily to improve their financial situation.
4. Many workers are taking on additional work. Sixty-one percent of workers reported doing work outside their primary jobs, and 71% of those doing additional work said they were doing so out of financial need. By generation, 80% of Gen Z workers, 77% of millennials, 57% of Gen X workers and 37% of baby boomers reported additional work.
5. Workers are delaying financial milestones. Nearly 70% of respondents said they had postponed a major financial goal, including emergency savings, retirement savings, paying down debt or buying a home. This included 83% of Gen Z respondents, 78% of millennials and 65% of Gen X respondents.
