Clearwater, Fla.-based BayCare’s graduate medical education program has nearly doubled in size following Match Day 2026, held March 20.
The health system will welcome 194 new residents in July, bringing its total to more than 400. BayCare also filled 100% of its residency positions for the second consecutive year, according to a March 26 system news release.
“Achieving a 100% match speaks to the quality of BayCare’s graduate medical education program,” Sowmya Viswanathan, MD, chief physician executive, said in the release. “Prospective residents are drawn to the exceptional physicians who teach here and the depth and breadth of experience they will gain.”
BayCare, a 16-hospital system with nearly 33,000 team members, offers 14 residency programs and three university-sponsored programs across specialties including emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and psychiatry.
Many incoming residents are Floridians or completed medical school in the state, and BayCare aims to grow the program to more than 650 residents by 2029, the system said.
Nationally, the 2026 Match was the largest on record, with more than 53,000 applicants and more than 44,000 residency positions offered, according to the National Resident Matching Program.
