A survey of 361 interns found that 92% are interested in reaching a C-suite or senior executive role.
Tax and advisory firm KPMG surveyed its winter interns, most of whom were part of Generation Z, in February and March. The cohort is defined as those born between 1997 and 2012.
Here are five key takeaways:
1. The interns named salary as their top consideration when evaluating a full-time role, second to work-life balance.
2. On average, the respondents said they would sacrifice $5,000 in salary for better benefits focused on employer flexibility, workplace culture and career development.
3. Among traditional workplace norms, an “always available” mentality is the top practice the respondents wanted eliminated, cited by 24% of respondents. A strict 9-5 schedule ranked second (21%), followed by a lack of focus on mental health and well-being (18%).
4. More than 80% of respondents said they preferred a hybrid schedule with three to four in-office days per week.
5. More than 70% of respondents said they were “moderately concerned” that artificial intelligence would significantly alter or replace entry-level work within the next five years, and 10% were “extremely concerned.” Almost half said they did not believe AI would result in net job creation.
