3 new ways to hold onto employees

Empowering employees to improve their skills is one way leaders can retain talented employees during this turbulent labor environment, Harvard Business Review reported July 4.

Here are three strategies managers can use to help retain employees:

  1. Have meaningful conversations with employees not just about promotion, but about their potential progression through the organization. Create connections between the employee and others and help them to see their own strengths, the report said.
  2. Give employees the space to experiment with their skills and potential in a safe and even fun way. This could take the form of a job swap where employees try working in a different department temporarily.
  3. Evaluate managers based on their ability to nurture an employee’s potential as opposed to solely team performance. At the same time, by empowering employees to move within the organization, they might be more likely to stay at the company, according to the report.
