Seaside, Calif.-based California State University, Monterey Bay has received a $15 million gift from Montage Health, based in Monterey, Calif., to establish a nursing school.
The Montage Health Helen Baszucki School of Nursing will offer a four-year, pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing, according to a March 12 news release.
Leaders said the programs aim to expand access to healthcare careers and strengthen the pipeline of nurses trained and retained in the region.
“Nurses are at the heart of every community’s health, and investing in their education is one of the most important commitments we can make,” Debbie Sober, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer for Montage Health, said in the release. “For decades, Montage Health has partnered with local colleges to prepare the next generation of nurses, and this expansion at CSUMB builds on that foundation in a powerful way. By creating more opportunities for local students to earn their BSN and stay in the region, we are strengthening our workforce, supporting our hospitals and clinics, and ensuring that patients receive the exceptional care they deserve.”
The gift honors Helen Baszucki, a nurse and clinical nursing instructor who died in September 2020.
Funding will support the launch of a pre-licensure BSN program with an initial cohort of 40 students, as well as faculty and staff hiring. It will also support more than 100 pre-nursing students preparing to apply to the BSN program as upper-division students.
Additionally, the MSN program will admit 25 students in its first cohort.
