Roughly 15% of hires at Hagerstown, Md.-based Meritus Health over the past two fiscal years were rehires.
More than 350 people previously employed by Meritus were hired again between 2024 and 2026, according to an Aug. 27 news release citing system records.
President and CEO Maulik Joshi, DrPH, tied the pattern to recruitment strategy. “We focus on our culture and our mission when it comes to recruitment,” he said in the release.
The system has an $18 hourly minimum wage that will rise to $20 in 2027 and offers flexible scheduling, Jena Judd, director of team member services, noted in the release. Health systems have increasingly moved toward more targeted pay strategies in 2026.
Meritus has also expanded its role in physician training. Its Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine opened in fall 2025 as Maryland’s first new medical school in a century, with 90 students in its first class and future classes expected to reach 180.
Meritus employs more than 4,400 people across inpatient, outpatient, mental health and medical education roles and is the largest nongovernment employer in Western Maryland, according to the release.
