The nurses, represented by the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, voted to authorize sending a strike notice last week. Negotiations continued last week, but collapsed around issues like health insurance, according to the report.
The hospital is working to bring in temporary replacements for the five-day strike and says services will not be affected, according to the report.
The Independence Day strike will be the second strike at Wilkes-Barre Hospital in the past 12 months: Nurses went on strike in late 2013. They also picketed earlier this year. The nurses have been working without a contract since April 2013.
