More Than 8,000 Healthcare Jobs Cut in September

For the third time in the last five months, healthcare had the most job cuts of any sector, with 8,128 reported layoffs in September, according to the latest report from global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Over the course of this year, healthcare organizations have cut 41,085 total jobs, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The firm says healthcare is making workforce cuts due to a number of reasons, including reduced Medicare and Medicaid spending and lower federal spending due to the sequester.

Across all sectors, planned job cuts fell to their lowest level in three months and fell 20 percent from August.

The monthly job report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is not available, as its release has been delayed by the government shutdown.
