Healthcare, Hospital Employment Increased in April

The healthcare industry added roughly 19,000 jobs in April, with hospitals contributing 1,700 jobs to that gain, according to the most recent jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The most employment growth in healthcare last month was in ambulatory healthcare services, with physician offices adding 5,600 jobs, outpatient care centers contributing 3,500 new jobs and home healthcare services growing by 2,500 jobs.

April was the second consecutive month hospitals gained jobs this year. From December through February, hospital employement was down by 10,000.

Healthcare isn’t the only industry that saw employment growth last month: Gains were widespread led by the retail trade, professional and business services, food services and construction industries. Overall, total employment grew by 288,000.
