Bristol Hospital Enacts Color-Coded Employee Uniforms

Bristol (Conn.) Hospital has completed a workforce change in which all employee uniforms are color-coordinated by department, according to Bristol Press report.

Bristol CNO Sheila Kempf, RN, told The Bristol Press the hospital enacted the measure to help reduce confusion among patients. "It really has a calming effect," she said. "In the past when everyone had a different design, whether it be a Mickey Mouse, flowers or whatever, it was hard to see who everyone was and what they were doing. This limits the number of colors and designs that you see in a day."

Similar uniform changes have taken place at other hospitals across the country. For example, Erlanger Health System in Chattanooga, Tenn., implemented a color-coded dress policy in January 2012.
