6 Stats on Healthcare Union Membership

Of healthcare and social assistance industry workers, 7.2 percent were members of unions in 2013, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That is up very slightly from 7 percent in 2012.

Union membership in the healthcare industry varies widely by occupation. For example, 11.9 percent of people in healthcare practitioner and technical occupations were members of unions in 2013, compared with 9.3 percent of healthcare support workers.

Healthcare workers represented by unions make more than their nonunion counterparts. The median weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers who were represented by a union in 2013 were $837, while nonunion workers in healthcare earned $732 each week last year.
