The U.S. retail giant  already has approached private equity funds and major retailers that may be interested in buying Seiyu. The company has faced more competition from online retailers in Japan  and less consumer spending.

Walmart recently sold 80 percent of its Brazilian operations and has sought  to invest in higher growth markets, such as China and India.
