Walmart to offer prepared meals, meal kits in-store to fight food competition from Amazon

By the end of the year, Walmart will offer prepared meals and meal kits in stores as part of the organization’s efforts to improve its grocery business, according to Fortune.

The move comes amid increased competition from companies such as Amazon, Aldi and Blue Apron. About 250 stores currently offer 10 different prepared meal options that range from $8 to $10, but Walmart plans to expand that offering to 2,000 stores by the end of the year. Four $15 meal kit options will be available in stores for the first time.

“It’s no big secret that [prepared meals] are offered in other retailers, and we have looked at them previously, but we were not thrilled with quality levels,” Tyler Lehr, a senior vice president at Walmart, told Fortune. “We were not going to make a move in this space until we were comfortable.”
