UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., and Milford (Mass.) Regional Medical Center are two of the latest hospitals that have begun implanting new pacemakers in cardiac patients. Devicemaker Medtronic has been sending thousands of these new pacemakers to cardiologists across the country, and most hospitals with cardiology programs are on board, accord to the report.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Revo MRI SureScan Pacing System in February. The MRI-compatible pacemaker is engineered to be protected from the MRI magnetic resonance, but there are still some drawbacks. The pacemaker currently only comes with dual chamber wires, and imaging is still limited to anything above the neck or below the waist, the report said.
