Name Change for N.C. Hospital on Hold Due to Trademark Conflict

A planned name change for Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C., which is part of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, also in Greenville, has been put on hold due to trademark dispute over the initials “UHS,” according to a Daily Reflector report.

According to the report, University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina planned to shorten its name to University Health System. It then planned on changing PCMH’s name to UHS Medical Center.

However, Universal Health Services in King of Prussia, Pa., sent a letter to University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina CEO Dave McRae saying the “UHS” name fell under its trademark privileges. Universal Health Services manages 231 acute-care hospitals, four of which are in North Carolina.

University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina plans on reviewing alternative brand names and will announce a new name in 90 days, the report said.
