The current ICU includes 37 beds, 12 of which are CVICU and 25 of which are the medical cardiology unit, according to the report. Many of the current ICU rooms are doubles. Under the renovation, UI Hospitals and Clinics will create six pods of four single-bed rooms for a total of 24 new beds.
The renovation is designed to keep cardiac patients in the same location regardless of the type of treatment they receive so patients don’t have to constantly move from intensive care to surgical units to recovery units, according to the report. The project also aims to ensure the same nurses care for the same patients to minimize handoffs and increase efficiency and safety.
Construction will begin in January and is expected to take one year to complete.
