The center was awarded $1.5 million from the National Cancer Institute and $1.3 million from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, according to a Dec. 12 news release from UChicago Medicine.
The grants will support two programs, Chicago EYES on Cancer and SHE in Oncology, the release said.
Chicago EYES on Cancer was established in 2017 and is a two-year research training program for science educators, and highschool- and college-aged students from Chicago’s underserved communities.
SHE in Oncology was established in 2021 and is a two-week virtual program for high school-age girls with backgrounds underrepresented in the cancer research workforce. The program is offered through a collaboration with Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center, Lexington, Ky.-based UK Healthcare’s Markey Cancer Center, Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center and University of Texas at Austin’s Livestrong Cancer Institutes.
