UC Davis increases stage 1 lung cancer diagnosis by 49%

Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis Health is utilizing 3D imagery to detect lung cancer sooner.

By combining the capabilities of an Ion robotic camera and Cios Spin 3D imaging technology, UC Davis Health physicians have increased the amount of stage 1 lung cancer diagnoses by 49%, according to a July 26 report from CBS affiliate KOVR

Chinh Phan, MD, director of UC Davis Heath’s Interventional Pulmonology Program, explained how the tools work together to spot lung cancer earlier to KOVR

The Cios Spin provides real-time imaging, allowing physicians to guide the Ion robotic camera with an attached catheter to biopsy nodules or lesions in the lung. 

UC Davis Health has performed more than 400 biopsies since acquiring the technology in 2022, diagnosing 107 patients with stage 1 lung cancer, according to the KOVR report.
