A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the number of practicing physicians in the United States is lower than previous estimates due to issues in reporting retirements accurately, according to a report by the New York Times.

The study estimates that there are currently 788,000 practicing physicians, down from estimates of 853,000. The study also suggests that fewer practicing physicians are 65 and older than previously estimated, and there are more physicians in their 20s and 30s than previously thought.

The study also predicts that there will be 957,000 physicians in 2020, with only 9 percent over 65. Previous estimates places the total number of physicians at 1.05 million and the percentage of physicians over 65 at 18 percent, according to the report.
