The medal, first awarded in 1985, recognizes Americans who have utilized science and technology to “tackle challenging problems and deliver innovative solutions for Americans and for communities around the world,” according to a Jan. 3 news release from the White House.
Dr. Yock was the Martha Meier Weiland Professor of Medicine at Stanford (Calif.) University where he is now emeritus faculty, founding co-chair of the university’s department of bioengineering, and founder and director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, recently renamed the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign, according to his university biography.
He has been recognized for developing the Rapid Exchange stenting and balloon angioplasty system. He also invented the Smart Needle and co-invented the strain-reduction patch for wound healing, his biography states.
