St. Mary’s Health Care System (Athens, Ga.) St. Mary’s Health Care System was the first community hospital in the U.S. to gain Joint Commission certification in stroke care, and is the first Advanced Primary Stroke Center in the Athens area. Physicians in the neurosciences program treat ailments including spinal cord injury, brain tumors, headaches, Parkinson’s disease and stroke. In its most recent rankings, CareChex named the hospital No. 5 in Georgia for stroke care, and Healthgrades honored the hospital with its America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care Award for 2017. Healthgrades’ also honored St. Mary’s with the 2017 Neurosciences Excellence Award. Additionally, St. Mary’s is a designated Blue Distinction Center+ for Spine Surgery.
