St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). This lauded pediatric treatment and research facility is one of 69 cancer research institutions to earn official designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center from the National Cancer Institute and the first of such centers devoted entirely to children. St. Jude’s was founded in 1962 under the maxim “no child should die in the dawn of life.” Public contributions account for 75 percent of the St. Jude’s operating funds — families never receive a bill from the hospital.
