St. Francis Hospital (Roslyn, N.Y.). In 1922, St. Francis Hospital began as a plot of land called “Elderfields,” which was used as a summer camp for New York’s inner-city children and run by the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Later, due to an epidemic of children suffering from rheumatic fever, the house and land became a children’s cardiac hospital of sorts.
In 1954, St. Francis Hospital opened its doors to adult patients and began on its path of becoming of the nation’s top heart hospitals. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital eighth nationwide for cardiology and heart surgery, and St. Francis is nationally ranked in seven other specialties. Other organizations, including The Leapfrog Group, the American Nurses Association, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and Press Ganey, have recognized St. Francis with various awards and honors.
St. Francis Hospital, which has 306 licensed beds, is part of Catholic Health Services of Long Island based in Rockville Centre, N.Y. By the 1980s, the facility became New York’s leading heart center and performed the highest volume of open-heart surgeries and cardiac catheterizations. In 2012 alone, St. Francis Hospital performed more than 1,300 open-heart surgeries and more than 2,700 angioplasties with stents — and with some of the highest quality scores for cardiac care. St. Francis Hospital, through its staff of about 2,600, handles more than 15,000 admissions and 180,000 outpatient visits annually.
