The Shriners organization has already voted to close its facility in Galveston, Texas, although Shriners may reevaluate the decision in response to insistence by the local community, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle.
Five other locations in danger of closing include hospitals in Erie, Pa.; Greenville, S.C.; Shreveport, La.; Spokane, Wash.; and Springfield, Mass., according to the FOX Carolina News report.
The Shriners endowment used to fund the hospitals has lost approximately $3 billion, and its 22 hospitals are losing approximately $1 million combined per day, according to the Associated Press.
The decision on whether or not to close the five hospitals under consideration will be made in July.
