The hospital has 30 operating rooms and 15 surgical specialties, and was faced with scheduling overlap and room requests. To address this inefficiency, SBUH worked with Stony Brook University College of Business and the hospital’s continuous quality improvement department to create a mathematical model for scheduling block time as efficiently as possible.
SBUH also implemented a supply chain initiative in which a team members and surgeons collaborated to reduce costs and achieve a savings of $2 million annually.
The hospital received the Excellence in Innovation Award for these two projects from the Advisory Board Company, a research, technology and consulting firm.
