Ochsner team develops 93% accurate predictive model for stroke patients

Researchers at New Orleans-based Ochsner Health have developed a 93% accurate model to predict functional independence in stroke patients, according to a study published Jan. 17 in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

The model combines four measurements to support real-time decision-making: stroke severity, frailty risk score, timing of intervention and thrombolysis utilization, according to a Jan. 28 news release from Ochsner. 

When integrated into an EMR, the model can proactively identify which stroke patients would “benefit from immediate surgery and who may need ‘pre-habilitating’ before surgery to achieve better outcomes,” Hernan Bazan, MD, a senior author of the study and the John Ochsner Professor of Cardiovascular Innovation at Ochsner Health, said in the release.
