Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians and some other private-practice physicians own the hospital, according to the report. It has an emergency department, ICU, maternity ward and cardiology area, according to the report.

The hospital’s fate was in question because of the pending federal restrictions on physician-owned hospitals under healthcare reform, but the hospital is opening well in advance of the year-end deadline imposed by the law. Its proponents were also able to convince officials that it serves a special purpose, for example by training Air Force family physicians, according to the report.
