Tuesday officially commences the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, and Thursday will begin the round of 64. Here, eight hospital executives took a quick break from the corner office and patient floors to weigh in on which team they think will win this year’s NCAA tournament.
Joyce Dombrouski, RN, Chief Acute Services Officer of St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Mont., and Western Montana Region CNO for Providence Health & Services: Gonzaga Bulldogs. They do belong and will finally shift the focus from the eastern side of the country!
John Everett, CFO of Cogdell Memorial Hospital in Snyder, Texas: I think Louisville will win because of their defense and their overall ability. Also, they have a great coach, and they have basically the same team from last year’s Final Four.
Jerry Fedele, President and CEO of Boca Raton (Fla.) Regional Hospital: Miami Hurricanes. They came from nowhere with a new coach and players to shock the ACC with a near perfect season. They lost a recent close one to Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke, which will refocus them for the difficult competition of March Madness. Go Canes!
Brian Gibler, MD, President and CEO of University of Cincinnati Medical Center: I am certainly a fan of college basketball, as my own son, Walt, played Division I basketball at Loyola University Chicago over the last four years and is now playing professionally in Augsburg, Germany. As a father, I know firsthand the dedication and pressure these young men face, and as an emergency physician for 30-plus years, I’ve treated many sports injuries similar to the one sustained by Duke star Ryan Kelly. [There is the] University of Cincinnati Bearcats, [but] picking Duke, the University of Miami and Indiana University in your brackets — like choosing the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for your medical care — will place you in a great position to win it all. I would probably go with Duke and Coach K to win the national championship.
Dawn Javersack, CFO of Boca Raton (Fla.) Regional Hospital: I think I will take a long shot and say Harvard, as they are more likely to produce future CFOs than NBA players!
Mike Tretina, CFO of Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa: I would like to see Iowa State win the tournament, as it is our hometown team, but any Philly school would be great. Realistically, I think that the University of Florida will have a great shot to win it because of their defense and coaching.
Jeffrey Weinstein, JD, Secretary and General Counsel of Tufts Medical Center in Boston: Here is why I think Villanova wins the NCAA championship: UNC is their first game, and if they get by that team, their road to glory is much easier. Ryan Arcidiacono is going to set a record for 3-pointers in an NCAA tournament. Villanova defeated Louisville, Syracuse, Marquette and Georgetown, all of whom were ranked at the time of the victory. Pope Francis is the new Pope and is rumored to be a Villanova fan. And most importantly, I am an alumnus!
Kay Winokur, RN, Vice President of Quality, Safety and Accreditation at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.: The Indiana Hoosiers. Consistently around the top in the nation, the defensive-minded Hoosiers played in the toughest conference in America, which will make them ready for anyone. All-American candidate Cody Zeller is a force on the offensive and defensive end and gives the Hoosiers the best chance at a national title.
