For three weeks, the study authors obtained swab cultures from 43 curtains in 30 rooms twice a week. An analysis of the swab cultures showed 12 of 13 curtains were contamination with pathogens within one week. In addition, 41 of 43 curtains were contaminated on at least one occasion, including 21 percent with MRSA and 42 percent with vancomycin-resistant enterococcus. Eight curtains contained VRE at many time points, suggesting frequent recontamination.
The researchers concluded further study may be needed to assess how to reduce bacterial contamination on privacy curtains.
