In the July 9 column, Dr. Donowitz, who is the LeBoff professor for research in digestive diseases at Johns Hopkins University, discusses the need for Congress to act to protect the research budget of the National Institutes of Health. Under last year’s Budget Control Act, the budget would face an automatic reduction in January of up to 11 percent.
Dr. Donowitz wrote that this reduction would be the latest step in the “erosion” of NIH’s ability to support research, an erosion that is occurring while other countries are placing a greater priority on research funding.
Dr. Donowitz served as president of AGA from 2006-2007, according to his bio. He is the director of the Hopkins Center for Epithelial Disorders.
