A former worker from New York’s Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has admitted to embezzling more than $1.5 million by ordering, stealing and reselling printer toner, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
From Sept. 2007-Aug. 2010, Marque Gumbs ordered and resold more than $1.5 million in toner and used the proceeds to purchase designer goods and other luxury items. In his role as a receiving clerk, he was responsible for ordering, receiving and stocking ink cartridges at the hospital. He would meet Office Depot trucks in the street before they reached the receiving area to take the cartridges, which were incompatible with any machines at the hospital campus, according to the report.
Mr. Gumbs will be sentenced on Aug. 8. With a plea to grand larceny, prosecutors are expected to recommend a more lenient prison term compared to the 25 years he faced if convicted at trial.
