Here are four things to know:
1. MSU and Dr. Strampel, 70, reached a retirement agreement July 5, retroactively effective June 30, according to a news release obtained by the Lansing State Journal.
2. Dr. Strampel stepped down from his post as dean in December 2017, but retained his tenure professorship at the time. Because of his retirement, he is not eligible to receive emeritus status and will forfeit other benefits related to his executive-level retirement. As per the agreement, Dr. Strample will receive a final $175,000 payment, which represents a compromise of the salary he would have received during the course of his tenure revocation process, according to the report.
3. John Engler, interim president of Michigan State University, moved to fire Dr. Strampel earlier this year, but could not do so, as Dr. Strampel was a tenured faculty member.
“As I said before, [Dr.] Strampel has not acted with the level of professionalism expected of an MSU employee, particularly one holding an office with the responsibility of patient safety. His conduct and attitude were unacceptable and went against the values of this university. While completing the tenure revocation process would have been highly satisfying, his immediate retirement means we have achieved the same goal — the end of the relationship between Strampel and MSU,” Mr. Engler said in the news release.
4. Dr. Strampel was arrested in March and charged with multiple criminal charges, which included using his position to “harass, discriminate, demean, sexually proposition and sexually assault female students,” according to court records belonging to the state attorney general’s office and obtained by the Lansing State Journal. He also faces a fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charge for allegedly groping a female student and two charges of willful neglect of duty related to his actions during and after a 2014 university investigation into Larry Nassar, DO, a former MSU physician accused of sexual misconduct by more than 130 women.
