Cigna: What claims data tells us about the state of virtual, mental healthcare

Americans are increasingly using virtual services for behavioral healthcare needs, according to a claims analysis from Cigna.

Three quick observations from Cigna’s claims data:

1. While virtual visits only made up 1 percent of all medical and behavioral visits before the pandemic, they now make up nearly 25 percent.

2. Primary care and behavioral health services were the largest specialties that used virtual visits in 2020, with a fifth of primary care visits being performed virtually and two-thirds of behavioral health visits being virtual.

3. Almost 45 percent of patients seeking behavioral healthcare services are children, teens and adults under 30.
