Dr. Makary recently released a book titled, “Unaccountable,” in which he says the common sense solution to fixing healthcare is empowering patients to choose where to receive medical care. Dr. Makary also called for public reporting of annual rates of catastrophic mistakes, such as retained sponges and wrong-site surgery by hospitals.

Dr. Friedberg, author of “Getting Over or Going Under: 5 Things You Must Know Before Anesthesia,” writes that every time a patient has anesthesia for surgery, there are dual-risks of under-medication and waking up too soon or over-medication.

Both authors agree medical professionals should be held more accountable and be more transparent about the risks of anesthesia.
