IORT combines surgery and a concentrated, precise dose of radiation, which reduces the number of treatments needed. Patients receiving IORT typically require three weeks of therapy after surgery, while patients without this option usually require six weeks of radiation therapy, according to the release.
In the research project, women with early stage breast cancer will receive a lumpectomy and IORT during surgery, followed by three weeks of external beam radiation therapy.
