Cleveland, Ohio-based University Hospitals, along with cancer centers in Michigan, Nevada and New Jersey, said that by providing cancer care at their freestanding centers, they qualified for a better reimbursement rate that would provide Medicare payments in line with actual treatment costs. According to the report, several Congress members from Northeast Ohio supported this amendment.
Opponents said that the proposed amendment would give hospitals, such as University Hospitals, an unfair advantage in a highly competitive market.
Although the amendment was filed, it was never taken up by the Finance Committee, according to the report.
