New Milford will shift obstetrical services to its sister hospital, Danbury (Conn.) Hospital, both of which are part of Western Connecticut Health Network.
Hospital officials said they decided to close the childbirth unit due to low birth volumes. In fiscal year 2012, New Milford physicians delivered 243 babies, a decline of 18 percent since 2008, and the hospital’s birthing center lost $650,000 overall, according to the report. However, New Milford will still provide local prenatal, postnatal, gynecological and primary care for women.
