Two years ago, Grady Memorial shut down its outpatient dialysis clinic, which displaced roughly 60 uninsured immigrants. The hospital eventually contracted with Fresenius to treat those patients for one transitional year and one extended year. According to the report, the extension contract expired Aug. 31, and Grady Memorial currently faces a $20 million deficit.
The hospital and dialysis provider disagree on which entity is responsible for the patients’ health and safety, the report said. Until the stalemate between Grady Memorial and the clinic is resolved, 22 patients — most immigrants — must wait until their health is life-threatening before federal law requires hospital care.
