The program will include a genetic counselor specialized in cardiovascular genetics and will offer genetic testing to determine the risk of heart disease and guide treatment plans.
The program will be supported by funding from the Strategic Research Initiative, a $150 million collaboration between IU School of Medicine and IU Health dedicated to research in cardiovascular disease, cancer and neuroscience and the development of new therapies for patient care. The new genetics program for heart disease is one step toward the Strategic Research Initiative’s goal of creating a comprehensive program to study and treat heart failure.
The Strategic Research Initiative is supporting the development of three biorepositories to support cardiovascular genetics research and testing programs, including the Human Cardiac Tissue Biorepository, an implantable device biorepository and an ischemic heart disease biorepository. The biorepositories will collect tissue samples from patients for research.
