The researchers — led by Amelia K. Adcock, MD, of Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Phoenix — compared bedside and remote physicians using standardized coma scales to assess patients. The researchers determined that the differences between the total bedside and remote physician assessments on both coma scales, the Glasgow Coma Scale and the Full Outline Of UnResponsiveness, were small.

The researchers concluded that level of consciousness can be “reliably assessed using existing robotic telemedicine technology.” Moving forward, they hope telemedicine can help providers in underserved areas with both triage and patient management.
