Avera Health's telemedicine program attributes $62M in cost savings over 1 year to eICU

Avera eCARE Services, a telemedicine program operated by Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health, released the results of its remote intensive care unit service Feb. 26.

Avera eCARE Services' eICU monitors 26 hospitals in nine states through an eICU solution offered by Royal Philips. The Philips eICU program enables 24/7 monitoring of critically ill patients and provides physicians with data analytics solutions to deliver patient information to bedside and remote caregivers.

"The program ensures the most critical patients are continuously monitored by leveraging the utilization of telehealth specialists to evaluate and alert bedside providers of the patients' condition," said Deanna Larson, CEO of Avera eCARE Services.

During the past 12 months, the Avera eCARE ICU program collectively saved the 26 hospitals $62 million in healthcare costs by reducing ICU and hospital length of stay, reduced nearly 11,000 ICU bed days through more streamlined responses to complications, and saved roughly 260 lives, according to a Feb. 26 statement from Philips.
