ATA releases new guidelines for stroke, mental health

The American Telemedicine Association published two new practice guidelines to improve virtual healthcare.

The guidelines, which cover telestroke care and telemental health, were developed by working groups of subject matter experts, with input from medical societies, health systems, provider groups, healthcare companies, medical boards and government agencies. ATA says the guidelines should be used as educational tools and operational references for patient care.

Practice Guidelines for Telestroke. This document provides standardized instructions for the remote assessment, diagnosis and management of patients exhibiting acute stroke symptoms. The guidelines relate to administrative, clinical and technical duties.

Practice Guidelines for Telemental Health with Children and Adolescents. This document focuses on clinical guidelines for those delivering behavioral and mental health services through real-time videoconferencing. It highlights considerations healthcare providers must keep in mind when treating young populations.

"The new guidelines advance the science of and growing need for telemedicine and help ensure uniform and effective quality of services for patients in need of these health-enhancing, life-saving services," said Jonathan Linkous, CEO of ATA.
