What patients really think of pharma: 5 survey findings

Patient advocacy groups' opinions about the pharmaceutical industry improved in 2017, according to a report from Patient View.

For the report, entitled "Corporate Reputation of Pharma in 2017 — the Patient Perspective," researchers polled 1,330 patient groups representing more than 73 specialties from 95 countries. The patient groups were polled on their perceptions of and relationships with 46 pharmaceutical companies between November 2017 and February 2018.

Here are five things to know.

1. Forty-three percent of patient groups said the drug industry had a "good" or "excellent" corporate reputation in 2017, compared to 38 percent of respondents who shared the same favorable view of the industry in 2016.

2. Patient groups ranked the drug industry third highest for corporate reputation out of nine healthcare-related sectors in 2017. In 2016, patient groups ranked the industry fifth.

3. Thirty-five percent of patient group respondents said the pharmaceutical industry was "good" or "excellent" at being patient-centered, up from 26 percent a year prior.

4. When asked to rate the drug industry's integrity, 31 percent of patient groups said pharma was "good" or "excellent" in 2017, compared to 28 percent in 2016.

5. Forty-eight percent of patient groups said the drug industry was "good" or "excellent" at innovation, marking an 11 percent drop from 2016.
